Involvement -
My first major breakthrough happened when I organized an open table on science and communication and invited the public relations experts, journalists, politicians and scientists to participate.My second major breakthrough was when I realized that the only way to reach the public in greater numbers was to bring science to them. For the beautiful Mediterranean town Split that meant taking our instruments, demonstrations, experiments, exhibits etc. to the streets.
Lessons learned -
I learned the following: we, the scientists are mostly responsible for the lack of public interest in what we do. We function well within our academic walls, but have a hard time relating to the “real” world.
