MISSION REPORT:
140000 TO
141500 A lot of haze in the BL going out to the reseaqrch area
142900 Starting first intercomparison leg at 195 m,
142900 Start of 200 m leg, intercomparison
143400 End Leg
143900 Start 2000 m leg
145600 Start 4000 m leg
145600 Downlooking lidar shows waves between 1.5 and 2.5 km, wavelength
apprx 500-1000 m
150910 Start research mission leg 1, 200 m, N->S
From lidar, BL is very indistinct, cloud development in this region
is about like the last flight. One cloud off to the west of our track
is precipitating
1515 Photo#1
11.5N
1533 Wind change at around 10.5 N, 90 @ 5 to almost no wind.
1535 Winds now 213@5, 10.364N
Generally low concentrations of haze droplets.
155700 Photo #2 @200 m near south end, 9.05N, showing cloud bases.
155900 Going through rain, but very small cloud
160100 Winds are increasing in velocity from southwest
161000 CN now is VERY low, < 400
161500 CN < 200
161615 End opf 200 m leg.
161900 Photo #3, @450m, start of 2nd flight leg.
162010 Going through old cloud
162220 CP
162330 CP
Just above cloud base
162423 CP
CN very constant between clouds
Cld base pressure 960, T=22
DP=22
1627 CP
162950 CP
163100 CP Cloudbases sometimes just above then just below.
163515 Ascending to 550 m to get into cloudbases in more northern clouds
163735 CP
Cld base pressure and T 949, 22.5
163930 CP
164100 Photo4, 9.4N,
164140 Right at cloudbase
CN and PCASP responded, some drizzle
164500 Passing through cloud remnants
164600 Approching windshift area, winds very low velocity
164800 Going in and out of old cloud remnants. Nothing showing up on CN, but
a little structure.
165000 Wind shift at 9.98N
165800 CP
17000 CP
170700 Going up to 650 m. Cloudbases higher up north.
Pressure 938, T=22
171315 CP right at cloud base
171700 Photo 5, North end of cloud base leg, looking north.
171850 Mild turbulence when going through cloud remnants.
172230 CN has increased. Visible hazelayer
172400 End of Cloud Base leg
172600 Start of 1500 m leg.
Winds have increased in velocity, 10m/s, from east.
172630 Increase in CN and PCASP while approaching clouds
172900 Photo 6, 11.7N, 1500 m leg, looking south
173300 Photo 7, 11.5, ""
173500 Approching clouds, right at cloud tops
174200 Skimming Cloud tops
Note, Clouds are not developing much above this level
175100 Wind shift around 10.25N, turning from 90 @ 10 to 150@5
175430 Pass over top of cloud that had been there previously
Low aerosol concentrations but very high humidity.
Clouds are rapidly decaying.
181430 Photo 8 approaching only cloud with vertical development, but
in dying stages.
181855 CP, 4 m/s vertical velocity, 1gm-3, 100 cm-3, 200 l-1 drizzle
Interesting behavior of CN, PCASP and FSSP-300 this pass. Large
increases in CN and PCASP but FSSP-300 decreases in concentration.
182700 VERY low CN concentrations. There has been no sign of new particle
formation
182900 End of 1500 m leg
183300 SABL turned to look downward.
183300 Starting 2500 m leg.
184000 Photo 9, Same cloud as previously but from southern side and 100 m
higher
184045 CP, same cloud but from south end. > 600/l drizzle, much more than
in 1500 m pass
185645 CP, much younger, > 2 gm-3, same aerosol signature
Appears to be new development in cloud field.
190600 Photo 10, new cloud
However, it had an interesting downdraft-updraft pattern, very
high watetr content, Smooth FSSP and drizzle concentration, little
sign of entrainment.
191750 Photo 11
191823 CP
1920 30 CP Both Cloud pass have good vertical velocity structure, i.e.
up and down drafts
192225 CP
Looking around, there is a lot of new cloud development.
192810 End of 2500 m cloud pass
193200 Start of 4000 m leg, headed south.
193530 Photo 12, looking at new cloud formation to south.
Strong southerly winds throughout the area at this altitude and
2500 m.
Elevated CN concentrations at this level. Much higher than lower
down.
PCASP and FSSP-300 are also elevated.
192845 CP Fairly wide but older. A lot of structure to look at in the
particles and vertical velocity
203300 End of 4000 m pass
203800 Starting 6000 m pass going north.
204000 Photo 13 looking at cloud to the north that we penetrated at 4000 m
while going south
204120 CP at -5.5 C. 2D sees ice. The droplet concentrations are very small,
less than 50, but 260x greater than 700. The aerosol behavior is quite
different as well. CN goes down but PSASP goes up. FSSP-300 is
anticorrelated with FSSP-100
205500 Photo 14 Photo of another glaciated cloud that we'll be going through
210010 Very nice cloud pass. 10 m/s updraft, 1 g/m3 water, drizzle, ice
mixture. Strong aerosol signature. Virtually flat response in 300
through cloud but more stucture in 100.
211400 Photo 15 Photo of E-W cloud line near top of research area. We may
penetrate this on our way back to base.
211600 Very clean region. CN < 200
212500 Photo 16 Photo of last cloud that we'll be going through. Nice
development.
212940 CP, very well developed cloud. Tops at least to 12km. Could be ice
multiplication happening. -5.5, 15 m/s updrafts, 5000 l-1 ice/water
Broad size distribution on FSSP, 260 sizes out to 300 um. Drizzle and
spatial crystals
215400 CN has increased to over 5000. No response on PCASP. Must be a contrail
or other pollution source
