Garmin_config.txt May 2005 R.Sonnenfeld ----------------- -------- ------------ gpscfg_GPS35LVS.exe will configure a Garmin 35 GPS like we fly on our Sondes. ESONDE35.CFG is a sample, standard CFG file. For consistency, let's always use this one. This program runs on WindowsXP (and probably on 98 etc.) On Sonnenfeld's Sony Vaio Laptop, The GPS goes on COM1. Can use Hyperterm to view the GPS. Here are correct settings for Hyperterm: Connect on: COM1 BPS 4800. Data Bits 8, Parity N, Stop 1, Flow Control: Off Other than that no setup is important. (Can select terminal type is VT100, but probably not needed). For our E-Sonde, the only string we need from the GPS is the GGA string. Likewise we need the PPS turned on. Other than that, I think we are using defaults for a GPS35 (though that is worth checking as well). The definitions of download and upload in the gpscfg program are backwards from what you might think (they are from the GPS perspective, not the computer's perspective). Download loads what is currently in the GPS into the computer so you can see it. Upload loads the tweaked settings from the computer to the GPS. After connecting the GPS to the laptop, you have to click connect in the GPSCFG program. There is also a menu (View/NMEA Transmitted sentences) that allows to see what the GPS is sending. Here is what ESONDE35.CFG looks like Lat 34 deg 03.969' N Lon 106 54.449' W Alt 1417.3 m Fix Auto Diff Auto Filter Auto PPS 1 Hz Baud 4800 Earth Datum Index: WGS 84 Don't know that all of these are optimal, but we go with them for now. ONE STEP NEW GPS PROCEDURE. CONNECT TO MY PC, "UPLOAD" ESONDE35.CFG. Done.
