Computer Assembly for a first-time geek ======================================= WARNING -- STEP 0-3 are the MOST DANGEROUS (to the hardware) steps. Do NOT proceed unless you are sure you understand what to do. 0) Ground yourself (repeatedly -- to the grounding wire in the wall) before taking components out of bags or putting them together. This applies particularly to the motherboard, processor and memory. DO NOT TOUCH THE PINS of any device. Hold Chips and memory sticks by their edges. 1) Lift release lever on Processor socket. Line up the gold and silver triangle on processor and socket. The processor should drop into the socket with no force at all except for its own weight. Do NOT PRESS the processor into the socket. Any pressure AT ALL will damage the pins and make the processor worthless. 2) Close the clamp lever -- processor is installed 3) Attach fan to processor. Do not touch the silvery pad -- Simply place it atop processor and attach clamps. Connect the fan power to the motherboard. 4) Insert the memory. It only fits one way (look for the notch). Put both sticks into slot A. You need to pull the tabs out first -- As the stick is pressed in the tabs will automatically close. 5) Verify that all the jumpers are configured as indicated in the defaults in the BIOSTAR GeForce6100-M9 motherboard manual. If they are, you do not need to move ANY jumpers. We used the default settings. 6) Remove the back panel connector shield with the colored plastic and replace with the one provided with the mother board. These shields have electrical AND mechanical functions and need to be modified before installation. Please consult with someone who knows before installing the shield. 7) Remove the hard-drive cage and the floppy drive cage. Hard drive cage has one screw -- floppy has two. 8) Install the motherboard, taking care to keep the grounding tabs above the ethernet and Keyboard connectors. Screw it in with screws provided. The screws need only be snug. 9) Install the power connectors onto the board. Attach the system fan connector to the board. 9) Install the many other connectors onto the board (read the directions). The text should be facing toward the arrows indicated in the manual. Do not connect the front-panel audio connector. It is possible to install connectors backwards -- don't. Tidy up the connectors with cable tie and mounting clamp provided. 10) Put the rails on the hard-drive and stick it in its cage. 11) Remove front cover of case. 12) Push the plastic latches back. CD Drive should slide EASILY into its slot from the front of case. If it does not -- consult someone. 13) Reinstall the hard-drive cage. 14) Attach power and SATA connector to HDD. 15) Attach power and parallel connector to CD-RW. 16) BOOT to BIOS and disable floppy drive. 17) Install Linux. =============================================
