The Third Split Workshop on Atmospheric and Oceanic Physics (SWAP3) was held in
Postira on the beautiful Adriatic Island of Brač, a 40 minute ferry ride from
Split, Croatia, 23-27 May 2011. This
workshop was organized by Dr. Željka Fuchs, New Mexico Tech physics PhD and assistant professor of physics at the University of Split. The workshop brought together
eight senior lecturers and 11 students, mostly graduate students from Croatia. Each senior lecturer was given the charge of talking about that area of their research which each considered to be the most significant. In addition, the students were each required to work beforehand via email with an assigned senior lecturer in order to prepare a talk based on a review of pertinent literature or on the analysis of specified observational or modeling data.
Midweek everybody needed a break and so we took an
excursion across the sound to the medieval town of Omiš (see the
map) as well as a boat trip up the river Cetina to an old mill, where we had lunch.
Drs. Sessions and Raymond attended as an outreach effort with partial support from the U. S. National Science Foundation. In addition, the Croatian Government provided generous support for the workshop.
