Galapagos Operations Report From: Steve Esbensen Date: 06 October 2001, 1822UTC Overall: Aerosonde operations aborted; soundings continuing Aerosondes After failure to receive aerosondes and fuel in a timely manner and the medical evacuation of an aerosonde team member to Metropolitan Hospital in Quito, along with the aerosonde team leader, it was decided to abort aerosonde operations for EPIC2001. Soundings -> INAMHI personnel are continuing to launch EPIC2001 soundings; OSU personnel have gone to Huatulco to participate in 95W C130 operations. -> 0000GMT and 1200GMT soundings will continue through 15 October. -> 0000GMT soundings will continue to 22 October. Operations Center Operations center is closed. Questions regarding the continuing sounding operations may be addressed to Steve Esbensen. Health report Aerosonde team member Jake Andrew was evacuated to Metropolitan Hospital in Quito on 2 October. He was accompanied by aerosonde team leader Nick Logan. Jake's appendix was removed on 3 October and a perforated intestine will be repaired after antibiotics have taken care of an acute intestinal infection. His condition is much improved as of 5 October. We are hoping for a speedy recovery.
