010930 Radar and Sounding Operation Status The radar operated continuously without significant problems. Anomalous echo patterns (bright band tilting with range) were observed in 3 consecutive scan volumes around 03 UTC. The artifact was due to the INU not fully compensating for the roll and pitch of the ship in heavy seas (8-10 foot swells). No other problems were encountered. Another quiet day over the radar sampling domain with scattered echos again moving quickly toward the NE in rapid southwesterly flow. Echo tops were generally below 8km, although an area about 100 km east developed higher and more intense echos after about 15Z. The 04 sounding stopped returning data above 500 mb and the 16Z humidity was lot near 350 mb. The 16Z sounding also returned no winds above the surface. Mean mixed layer mixing ratios were highest at 00Z and progressively decreased throughout the day. A characteristic of many of the soundings was a marked dry layer between 850-700 mb. The Ron Brown leaves station this evening at 06Z (00L) and will be at the 8N buoy tomorrow afternoon (after making stops for CTD casts along the way).
