010927 Radar and Sounding Operation Status The radar operated continuously without problems. Convective activity again increased overnight. Several cores passed over the ship between about 05-09 UTC producing heavy rain. By 10Z, the cells had congealed into a large region of mostly stratiform precipitation with embedded convective elements. This feature stayed more or less in place over the ship for an extended period (through at least 19Z) before moving westward and slowly dissipating. Similar to yesterday, animation of radar products suggested cyclonic circulation of echo features in the vicinity of the ship. A tough day for sonde data. The 04Z sounding did not return winds. The 08Z sounding did not return data and was lost due to heavy rain. Both the 12 and 16Z sondes terminated near 600 mb, presumably due to sensor icing.
