010924 Radar and Sounding Operation Status The radar operated continuously without problems. As yesterday's system moved out of the radar domain, another one moved into it's place, developing over the vicinity of the ship around 06 UTC. However unlike yesterday, today's activity had mostly low echo tops and much more homogeneous, stratiform type precipitation associated with it. The event appeared to be formed by boundaries moving in from the east that interacted with residue from yesterdays convection (outer band of hurricane Juliette?). During the course of the day, the system slowly advected northward and decayed significantly by about 20Z. Another difficult day for sounding data collection. Only the 08Z release returned both wind and thermodynamic data through the full depth of the troposphere. Both the 00 and 16Z launches stopped below the freezing level, most likely due to balloon and/or sensor icing. A 12Z launch was not attempted due to heavy rain at the ship.
