REVIEW OF PREVIOUS FORECAST
Yesterday we discussed the convection upstream that was associated with a
vorticity center and an easterly wave and other convection that appeared to be
associated with outflow boundaries from prior convection. This morning, NHC
was still drawing only a single circulation center at 6N, 87W (Image 1). There
continues to be convection out to the west of this circulation center At first, this
appeared to be sustained by a self propagating gust front transporting northerly
winds from aloft down to the surface, but now there appears to be some cyclonic
rotation. More below....
GENERAL OVERVIEW
ITCZ flights are occurring today. NSF C130 was aloft about 9:30 and the NOAA P3
by about 10:30. Conditions are good as a weak cyclonic circulation center is
now located at 7N, 94W (Image 2). A nice band of convection is starting to
fire up along 95W and it is likely the aircraft are in some of this. (But
we're still waiting for some of the ocean probes to get through customs...arrg)
Wisconsin winds have picked up on this new circulation and now shows lobes of
vorticity extend forther west and north along 95W (Image 3).
DISCUSSION
Should continue to be active along the 95W ITCZ the next wo days.
Nice job by Greg here getting a GOES SST product going. It should be useful
for the equatorial front flights. Will add debriefing comments from the A/C
folks below later
