Though the the coupled ocean-atmosphere system in this region acts as a single dynamical entity, we can conveniently divide the problem of understanding this dynamical system into three components, the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ), the atmospheric boundary layer in the cross-equatorial flow feeding the ITCZ, and the underlying oceanic mixed layer.
